Egyptian History Part 3

EGYPTIAN CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

The Ancient Egyptians wore light clothes made from linen. Linen is made from flax- a plant which was grown along the Nile. Once harvested, the flax was soaked in water until soft. The soften flax was then separated into fibers which were beaten before being spun into thread which was then woven into cloth.

Make-Up- Both Egyptian men and women wore make up. They used black kohl eyeliner to line their eyes and darken their eye lashes and eye brows. They coloured their eye lids with blue or green eye shadow made from powdered minerals. Henna dye was used to colour their lips and nails.

Jewellery- Ancient Egyptians began producing their jewellery from simple natural materials such as plant branches, shells, beads, solid stones or bones arranged in threads of flax or cow hair. To give these stones some intensity Egyptians began painting them with glass substances. Since the time of the first dynasty, ancient Egyptians have been skilled in making jewellery from solid semiprecious stones and different metals such as gold and silver.

Footwear- Ancient Egyptians went barefoot most of the time but wore sandals for special occasions or if their feet were likely to get hurt.

The sandals worn by the poor were made of woven papyrus or palm while those worn by the rich were made of leather.

Men clothing- Men generally wore a linen loincloth, or a short knee- length skirt. Some skirts were longer, than others. Over this, they might wear a shirt- like tunic.

Rich Egyptian men (such as pharaohs or priests) were able to afford the best quality linen which was very fine and almost see-through. Priests added a leopard skin draped over one shoulder.

They wore as much jewellery as they could afford and decorated their clothes. They also wore headdresses for special occasions.

Women clothing- Women’s clothing in Ancient Egypt tended to be more conservative than that of men. Throughout the Old, Middle and New Kingdom, the most frequently used costume for women was the simple sheath dress. A rectangular piece of cloth was folded once and sewn down the edge to make a tube. The dress would extend from a few inches above the ankles to either just above or just below the breasts. Two shoulder straps held the dress up. The dresses worn by rich Egyptian women were made from fine transparent linen. Like the men, rich Egyptian women decorated their clothes and wore jewellery and headdresses.

Ancient Egyptian Children usually went naked.

Mammals: THE GIANT PANDA

A giant panda is a black and white bear.  It has black fur on ears, eye patches, legs, and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Although fairly big, the giant panda isn't really all that giant. It can grow up to about three feet tall and six feet long when standing on all four legs. The female pandas are generally smaller than the males. They like dense temperate forests with lots of bamboo.

What do giant pandas eat?

Giant pandas primarily eat bamboo, but they are carnivores meaning they do eat some meat. Besides bamboo, they will sometimes eat eggs, some small animals, and other plants. Since bamboo doesn't have a lot of nutrition, pandas have to eat a lot of bamboo to stay healthy. As a result, they end up spending most of the day eating. They have giant molars to help them crush the bamboo.

Cute Panda Eating Bamboo

FUN FACTS

Although the giant panda eats mostly bamboo and looks very cute and cuddly, it can be dangerous to humans.

The panda is depicted on some Chinese coins.

The Chinese word for the giant panda is daxiongmao. It means giant bear-cat.

There are over 3.8 million acres of wildlife reserves in China to protect the Panda's habitat.

Giant pandas do not hibernate like some bears.

Panda cubs don't open their eyes until they are six to eight weeks old and they weigh between three to five ounces. That's about the size of a candy bar!

Egyptian History Part 2

EGYPTIAN PHARAOHS

Continued...
Example of Egyptian Pharaohs:

  • Hatshepsut (Fifth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty)
  • Thutmose III (Sixth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty)
  • Tutankhamen (Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty)
  • Ramesses II (Third Egyptian Pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty)
  • Cleopatra VII (Last active Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt)

Hatshepsut- Queen Hatshepsut was Egypt's first female pharaoh who reigned for about 20 years as one of Egypt's most successful rulers. Dressed not as a lady, but in men's clothes, she has been regard as the only female pharaoh to erect the most monuments during her reign.

Thutmose III- Thutmose III spent the first two decades of his reign in co-regency with his father's wife, Hatshepsut (commonly known as His Aunt). He is compared with Napoleon but unlike Napoleon he never lost a battle. Thutmose III's impact upon Egyptian culture was profound. He was a national hero who was revered long after his time.

King Tutankhamun- Tutankhamun, or better known as King Tut, is an 18th dynasty pharaoh who inherited the throne at a young age (Age 9). His reign was short-lived and upon his death (Age 18) he quickly faded into the sands of Egypt. Though King Tut accomplished little in his life, he is the most recognized and probably the most famous pharaoh today attributed to the discovery of his tomb and his elaborate treasure. When he became king he married his half-sister, Ankhesenpaaten. They later change their names from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun and Ankhesenpaaten to Ankhesenamun. They had two still-born daughters who were later discovered as mummies in king tut’s tomb.

Remeses II- Rameses II was around 30 years old when he became king of Egypt - and then reigned for 67 years. “Rameses the Great” constructed many impressive monuments (such as Abu Simbel) and more statues of him exist than any other Egyptian Pharaoh.
He fought and won a peace treaty with the Hittites (People who once lived in what is now modern Turkey and northern Syria).

Cleopatra VII- Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, ruling Egypt from 51 BC - 30 BC. She is celebrated for her beauty and her love affairs with the Roman warlords Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. What are often not associated with Cleopatra were her brilliance and her devotion to her country. She was a mathematician, a very good businesswoman and a quick-witted woman who was fluent in nine languages.
